Clement Abaifouta

Clément Abaifouta is President of the Chadian Victims’ Association (AVCRP) which seeks to bring Hissène Habré to justice.

Clément was arrested in July 1985 by Habré’s dreaded political police, the Documentation and Security Directorate (DDS), when he was about to leave the country on a scholarship, because he was suspected links to the armed opposition.

Clément was in a DDS prison for four years, during which he was in charge of burying his co-detainees in mass graves outside N’Djamena. He estimates that he buried up to 500 other detainees.  After his release, Clément suffered from serious post-traumatic stress, but joined Souleymane Guengueng and others in the search for justice. In September 2007, he was elected President of the AVCRP.
